First American-born dancer.Durang has endured in performance history as one of America’s earliest talents. He was a dancer, actor, singer, musician, acrobat, and an innovative businessman. In 1795 he joined Ricketts’ Circus. He featured in pantomimes, equestrian acts, and musical numbers. He became one of the most trusted members in the company and a dear friend to Ricketts. Durang eventually opened his own Circus in 1800. Sometime after 1816, Durang composed his memoirs which endure as a defining resource of early American Circus history.
